Chinese paper lanterns have a rich history dating back about 2000 years. They were originally created as “sky” or “flying lanterns” for military aid purposes from oiled rice paper fitted on a bamboo frame. A candle burning inside enabled the lantern to rise into the air, and was used for communication on the battlefield. During the Yuan Dynasty, sky lanterns were used in rituals and ceremonies as symbols of hope and good wishes. They would be released into the sky, believed to be carrying messages to the gods. They were also seen hanging outside homes, serving the same purpose.
Today, decorative paper lanterns are not only used for many cultural celebrations and festivals, but are a casual and simple addition to any room in your home.
