The election is over and the American people have spoken. “Change has come to America.” It’s out with the old and in with the new; a time for change and a time for renewal. In this same spirit, Los Angeles-based interior designer Lara Fishman of Storm Interiors (www.storminteriors.com) and Designers Call (www.designerscall.com) offers up a few good design tips on how our new President (and his First Lady) might update the Oval Office to reflect the same inspiring ideals of hope, optimism, confidence and unity.

Presidents before have remodeled the Oval Office in their taste; from flooring to furnishings to paint. When President Obama gets to Washington, Fishman suggests that he and his first lady put their own personal stamp on the Oval Office, bringing to it a new level of contemporary sophistication, the likes of which it has not yet seen. Goodbye to the white pine and oak wagon-wheel pattern that was installed by Reagan in 1982 and more recently re-installed by George W. So long to the washed out rugs and overly dramatic valences and heavy drapery. It’s the dawning of a new era, and it’s time for the Oval Office to boldly enter into the 21st century in modern elegance and timeless style.

Starting with the floor:

While wagon wheel pine and oak doesn’t exactly inspire, rather than chuck it all and send it to the landfill, Fishman would opt for the eco-option. Keep it. Strip it. And go rustic. High gloss is decidedly passé. It might also be stylish and symbolic to stain the wood black and white, perhaps sending a subtle message to our newly unified nation.

Every President designs their own oval rug including our country’s great seal. Fishman suggests calling on a rug company like LA’s Yayla (www.yayla.com) to create a one-of-a-kind rug in muted reds and blues in a stylized “Tree of Life” pattern that incorporates the seal. Wholesale proceeds from Yayla sales go toward the benefit of the Tibetan refugee community and the children of Nepali weavers as well as projects within Tibet so the new President would be decorating with a conscience.

Moving to the walls

Each President also gets to choose the hue for the walls of the Oval Office. Since our 44th President will be inheriting an unprecedented mess and surely be working long, hard hours, he should definitely stay with a neutral, calm, and soothing color. Fishman suggests the Eco Natura version of White Dove by Benjamin Moore (an American company!). President Obama can’t afford to get sick from VOCs!

The original Georgian ornamentation is quite gorgeous, so Fishman would opt to give it new life with a coat of high gloss Benjamin Moore white, though if Barack is feeling bold, she might suggest painting them a beautiful shade of marine blue. She would also pick an accent wall, probably the one behind the Resolute desk, to draw they eye and add drama.

On this accent wall, Fishman suggests adding Given Campbell’s hot off the press “Obama Victory Paper.” Printed with water soluble air dry Versatex inks on paper that do not emit harmful or combustible fumes, it’s another great eco-stylin’ option. If that’s too wild, blue grasscloth wallpaper is a more subtle option and recalls Obama's Chicago's Lake Michigan. Another interesting option for the accent wall would be to commission an artist, such as Shepard Fairey (who designed the ubiquitous Hope posters for Obama’s campaign) to grace the Oval Office with something unique, timeless, urban, and inspiring.

Movin’ on Up to the Windows

The drapes and valences are straight out of the 1800s. Fishman suggests tailoring them up into the 21st century by losing the valences completely and installing triple pleat split panels. Pattern on pattern would be preferable, but if that might scare some on the President’s team, Fishman suggests white Belgian Linen (a subtle shout out to the UN which meets in Brussels). For the trim, something subtle by the French company Houles (www.houles.com) - regal and metallic, hip and graphic. Plus again, a gesture to the French to forever erase any ill will that may have been caused by the whole Freedom Fries debacle.

Shedding Some New Light in the Oval Office

The gorgeous elliptical cove ceiling with the Seal of the President of the United States of America is a stroke of pure baroque genius, but it needs more drama. Fishman suggests papering it with silver leaf. To that she would add a modern, organic, sculptural chandelier that would hang above the conference area’s coffee table. Something gorgeous like an imported Mazzega Murano handblown chandelier. Another option would be a dynamic red, white and blue glass chandelier from America's foremost international artist, Dale Chihuly. This fixture symbolizes in artistic terms the values of Obama's presidency: hope, optimism, confidence and unity.

Fine Furnishings

It would probably be considered a crime to lacquer the Resolute desk in white, so in the spirit of tradition, Fishman would leave the desk as is. It’s rich in history and would not be changed a bit. The desk chair would be replaced by a vintage Herman Miller Eames Executive Soft Pad Chair with 4-star base or the 5-base which is more stable. Fishman suggests re-upholstering the chair in the eco-company Innovations' Abilene vinyl in chalk. This faux-ostrich is stain resistant, should the Pres spill his soy mocha chai latte.

While the seating area in the Oval Office has been the same for eons, Fishman suggests making it a bit more intimate. Toss out the gold damask love seats with skirts. Replace them with bright and colorful blue leather Chesterfields or maybe even a yellow Vladimir Kagan curvy sofa arranged around a vintage coffee table Pictured above). Add a touch of Americana with an “industrial chic” re-purposed Sydelle and Jay Livingston coffee table. Flank the fireplace with timeless Hans Wegner Danish Papa Bear chairs and ottomans in vibrant blue (see above) or for a bit more tradition, Storm Custom's Deco Wings pictured below.

Accessories and Artwork

Fishman is sure that the White House collection of art offers up some amazing treasures, but if Ron English would be so nice as to offer up his Abraham Lincoln-Barack Obama fusion painting, she is sure there is a place for it in the Oval Office. Wit and humor are welcome in the new administration, right?

Add vintage lamps with colored glass, clad a wall with Federal Bullseye mirrors, and intermix great glassware on the bookcases with hand blown pieces by Caleb Siemon such as the “Banded Series.” For the President's reading pleasure, perhaps stock the shelves with nobel laureates: Saul Bellow, an adopted native son of the Windy City, Toni Morrison and Dereck Walcott. Walcott could come in handy should the President want to read poetry to his two daughters when they come to visit.

For the mantel, Fishman suggests a modern candlebra. Perhaps some large coral or shells to harken back to the President’s somewhat tropical upbringing on an island. Fishman might also add some Hawaiian inspired art.

For the sofas, add a splash of color with East Meets West American crewel fabric pillows, or maybe a few Mongolian fur pillow for an international twist. For a quick nap, the sitting area would not be complete without a lovely Kenyan throw .

Fishman also thinks a nice bed is in order for the first family’s new rescue dog. She likes the Holden dog bed which comes in walnut finish, eco-friendly and is available in one size. Add a sheepskin or "Zensational" cashmere blanket for warmth and ultimate comfort both from Olivegreendog.com.

So on to the Rose Garden - just outside the east door - well, perhaps some things are better left untouched.

In the end, whatever works, may all of our great nations and native citizens be represented through the selected decor of this historic room redesigned to simply inspire the inevitable movement of change.

1. Allocation of study space:

At an early age, children learn to allocate their time and focus on the task at hand. To provide the best study area possible, separate play space from study space, by positioning the desk in an area of the room that is dedicated to quiet reading or study times only. This can be achieved by keeping toys and other distractions away and by surrounding the study area with bookshelves and office supplies. Children now have a visual allocation of space that matches their focus on the given task at hand.

2. Remove all distractions in room:

In order to achieve the most efficient study time, clean the room and remove all clutters, toys and electronic games. This can be done by providing fun, colorful boxes or shelves and organizing them in the play portion of the room.

3. Kid sized study space:

- provide furniture that is fun and just the right size for your child. That way, your child will know that this space is made JUST FOR THEM.

4. Efficient study space:

Clear the desk from all clutter. During homework and study time, children may need paper, post-its, highlighters, scissors, pens/pencils, staplers and other office supplies. Provide pencil holders, desk drawers and other organizational units and allow the child to arrange their study area as they please. They will know exactly where they placed each item and will have immediate access to them during study times.

5. Think out loud:

To organize little messages, assignments, notes and even thoughts, cork boards and chalkboards are a fun way for children to be creative and let their minds flow. Paint a corner with blackboard paint and give them a space where drawing on the wall is encouraged! They will learn to express themselves through brainstorming and form basic, organizational habits.

6. Easy on the eye:

Have you ever stared at a book, or in the case of this generation - a computer screen, for too long and gotten a headache? Improper lighting has been proven to damage the eyesight. With your children still developing, it is crucial to provide good task lamps that provide enough lighting for the desk but yet are soft enough on the eye. Some great lighting options for kids’ rooms are pivotal architectural task lamps (some can clip to side of desk), floor lamps that can cantilever over desk space like the arc lamp, wall sconces can also spill light from the walls to improve even light distribution and prevent more shadowing effects. Recessed can lights overhead should always be set on dimmers. Having the lamps on three way switches is also helpful so the amount of light output depending on time of day can be modified. Wall-mounted library lamps work great to accent and highlight cork or chalk board from above.

7. Smart placement

You want your child to feel like their study space is a sanctuary, and not a prison. Place their desk within view of a window, but not directly in front of it. You want them to feel connected to the outside world, but not distracted by it. This gives them something to look at as they think and ruminate, giving their little eyes a much-needed break, but keeps them focused on what they’re doing. Additionally, sunlight can enter and brighten the study space, while providing an energy-saving and healthy alternative to store bought lamps.

Not all study time involves sitting at a desk and hunching over math problems. At times, children need a change of space to refresh their minds. A big, comfortable lounge chair, or potato sack, is a perfect place for children to sink their mind (and body) into the exciting world of literature. Give them a cozy place to escape to physically as their mind goes off even further. There are so many options for kids task and lounge seating. The classic Eames shell chair with the Eiffel tower base is a great ergonomic fit for a desk chair as is zuo modern’s re-interpretation of the Herman Miller time life chair. Eames’ LCM & LCW kids’ versions are a timeless bet as well. Emeco also makes a child’s version of the navy chair available in the original stainless steel, orange and navy. Designer’s Call’s Rock ‘n Wave lounger is a hybrid of a rocker and lounge chair and if fully upholstered. The Fatboy™ original by Dwell bean bags are awesome and last forever – kids don’t outgrow them. They are now available in Marimekko prints. Moroccan poufs are great to pair up with the Fatboys to prop up feet and as an accent table.

9. Pick your hue wisely

It’s scientifically proven that certain colors evoke particular emotions in people. Selecting the color for your child’s study space is purely subjective; a sum of several considerations. Is your child more on the calm or active side? Are they prone to daydreaming or distraction?

To create a mellow ambience, butters and paler tones of blue/greens are best. Vibrant color tends to excite and children should feel relaxed in order to best imbibe new information. For a more neutral background, Warm tones like gr-eige (grey-ish beige) and mushroom are reasonable choices. Consider wallpaper organic in nature like a grasscloth to create a cocoon like atmosphere. You may consider highlighting the study wall where desk is placed with this subtle wallpaper.

Window treatments should not create a black-out effect, but rather a sense of translucency where natural light filters through to create warmth and alertness in the environment. Woven wood shades for an earthy look or lighter Belgian linens both create this translucent calm. The shades also help with insulation from heat and sound.

Fabrics should be almost wearable. Textured, soft and washable are key descriptions to consider when upholstering a desk chair or lounge chair.

Let’s give credit where credit is due. Not all bachelor pads are decorated with beer posters, sports team logos, and neon signs. But even the most savvy of single men sometimes require a bit of help to make it over the design hump. While patterns, fabrics, furniture, and accessories are not necessarily part of the average male’s vocabulary, most men understand that nothing says ‘eligible bachelor’ to a lady like a well-designed space. The way a man lives in his space speaks volumes about the way he lives his life.

- Select a feature wall (bed wall or couch wall) and paint it in a bold tone - navy, reds or deep taupe are great mood colors and maintain masculinity
- Hang an organic wallcovering like grasscloth in the dining area
- Belgian linen weaves, boucles and other heavily textured fabrics give spaces warmth and can also help hide staining
- Minimize leather upholstery as it is too commonplace for the bachelor - use it sparingly like on a vintage lounge chair
- Hides for area rugs are timeless and masculine
- Bring in a bit of preppy and accent with color & pattern: paisley, stripe and plaid pillows always work!

I'd like to remodel, but I barely have time to brush my teeth.
We're all about saving you time. Instead of lengthy meetings with a designer, just use our simple online form (link online form to the form) to send us key information and design cues of what you're picturing, and we do all the work. You can see a transformation of your space - or just a refresher using what you already have - the very first time we meet.

Baby makes three (or four or . . .). I thought we'd be in a bigger home by now. How can I make this work?
How you organize your space can be as important as the amount of space you have. One of our experienced designers will study your home's floor plan and furniture layouts. Then, whether it's removing a wall to accommodate the increased "traffic" or just editing the placement and type of furniture - such as pieces with built-in storage - we can offer specific suggestions your whole family will appreciate. Take advantage of our special Back to School / Back to Work limited time offer (link to home page special offer section with new offer up) !

Colors, colors, colors. What should I choose?
It's hard enough to choose a single color, but to bring real style to your interiors requires carefully selecting complete palettes for each room. One poor choice can ruin the overall synergy, and colors often look different in your home than they do on paint chips in the store. Our designers are not only fluent in the language of color, they are also fully up-to-date on the latest trends. So whether you prefer modern or classic palettes, you can be sure your colors will not only reflect your style, but look great too. Click more to read full article.

Note From Designers Call:

Do any of these sound all too familiar? Many of us lack the time and resources to embark on a home makeover or interior redesign the traditional way: working with an expensive interior designer with time-consuming design consultations, excursions to design centers and boutiques to choose furniture and accessories, and weeks of inconvenient construction. Designers Call aims to simplify the process. Check out our great packages online very soon!
